Widespread Pain

Understanding your pain...
The pain associated with fibromyalgia differs from other pain in that it typically covers all four quadrants of the body and is "roving" pain, or pain that moves to different areas of the body. The most common areas of pain include the low back, neck, upper back, legs, hands, and head.
The quality of the pain in fibromyalgia often varies from day to day, just as the location of the pain does. The pain can vary between sharp, dull, burning, shooting, and aching.
There are two common types of pain associated with fibromyalgia:
1. Myofascial Pain- This pain is typically caused by chronically spasmed tissues, especially the muscles. However, other tissues can generate pain as well.
2. Central Sensitization Pain- This pain is different in that it has the tendency of being burning and/or shooting pain. This pain is caused by hyperactivity of nerve endings and/or abnormal processing of pain signals by the brain. In severe cases of central sensitization, even small aggravations, such as the wind blowing on the skin, can induce a pain response.
